With our guide you will visit the Basilica of S.ta Maria Maggiore, the biggest church of Rome dedicated to the Virgin Mary and famous for its mosaics dating back to the V cent. You proceed then to the church of S.ta Prassede unknown jewel of Rome that will surprise with its astonishing mosaics and the sacred relic of the column where Christ was flaggelleted. Crossing the Monti district which still preserves feautures of a medieval town with its small artisan's workshops you will climb the slope of the Borgia to reach the Church of St. Peter in Chains, inside it is housed one of the masterpieces of art, Michelangelo's statue of Moses, sculpted for Pope Julius II's tomb which took up Michelangelo for most of his life.
Leaving the church we walk along Via delle Sette Sale looking at the ruins of Trajan's baths huge complex which was built over Nero's Domus Aurea. We reach then the Park of Colle Oppio with main entrance at the start of the Via Labicana. At the entrance of the Park we find the main gate of the Domus Aurea (Golden House), magnificent private residence of the Emperor Nero. The visit is possible only after reservation. In alternative you will visit the ruins of the Ludus Magnus, the main school for gladiators in ancient Rome and finish our interesting walk to St. Clement's Basilica, an extraordinary superimposition of four different buildings covering a span of XX centuries of Roman history. |
